From Mary Doman (thanks, Mary!)
For those of you who text, and are so inclined, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that it is possible to donate immediately to Haitian relief through the Red Cross.
Text 'HAITI' to '90999', and a $10 donation will be made to the Red Cross, and charged to your cell phone bill. The Red Cross needs money more than anything else to buy and transport needed supplies and move aide workers into the country. Time is of the essence in order to save and preserve as many lives as possible.
A personal note from Mary Doman ...I went to Nicaragua six months after the December 1972 earthquake that destroyed the capital, Managua, to help with relief work. The capital was still in ruins...buildings gutted or with sides gone, no lighting, people living in ruins of their homes, three-story buildings pancaked into one story. At night, the only sound to be heard was the wind in the darkest nights I have ever seen. Grass grew in the window boxes of shattered homes. Two mass graves, long gashes in the earth, held 5,000 bodies each. They were buried en masse, covered with quicklime, to prevent disease. People had left makeshift markers for their lost loved ones. The magnitude of such a disaster is overwhelming, and every single dollar and every single person who can help is needed.
Thanks for listening....I'm going to try to provide a list of more ways to help a bit later. In an ideal universe, the Enterprise and the sister ships of the Federation would already be there on the ground, with McCoy and other medical personnel setting up triage and doing their best to help the people. In the spirit of that universe, I remain...
Mary
World Vision (www.worldvision.org) is also on the front lines.
The Robert F Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights is also collecting funds for their agents, who are already on the ground in HaitI. Here's that link: https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/haiti_earthquake?source=earthquake&subsource=email
Whichever international relief organization you're most accustomed to supporting, please support them right now. The need has seldom been greater...
Thanks!
